SmartPAYT helps cities implement behavioural changes and overcome challenges linked to waste management, by digitising the sector and offering citizens an active part in the sustainable transformation of their cities.
How it works
Based on smart equipment, this solution enables controlled access to waste containers to digitise the amount of garbage thrown away. Through Radio-frequency identification (RFID) devices, it enables access management of waste containers for one of two purposes: incentivise citizens to reduce the amount of waste produced with PAYT (Pay-As-You-Throw), or reward citizens for separating their waste with RAYT (Receive-As-You-Throw). The web platform is responsible for the management operations on the devices that perform access control to data visualisation insights and reports about sustainable behaviours.

In compliance with the European Commission, Ubiwhere is aligned with EU’s waste policies, to create incentives and change consumers behaviours. Waste Containers can be retrofitted with access control devices , such as radio-frequency identification card readers which lock and unlock their opening, and each household gets RFID cards and tags to unlock the containers.
Meet our management platform
Our platform provides a map overview of the city with the geolocation of the containers for real-time status monitoring of each one and useful insights for the equipment maintenance and management. It allows a detailed analysis of past deposits and collection events and an overview of the citizens’ interactions with the solution, via statistics and analytics dashboard. The goal is to provide valuable insights to improve the containers availability and increase the collection process’s efficiency.
It works in both strategies
Cities around the world have different methods to charge for waste taxes. In some cases we pay for them in our water bills, and in others these taxes are related to our household size or residency areas. Using Smart PAYT, these taxes become more equitable, as they are charged according to the waste produced by each household, monitored by the solution’s access control system.
The EU waste policy provides a framework to stimulate innovation in waste sorting, reusing and recycling that can be supported by the RAYT (Receive-As-You-Throw) strategy. This way, citizens are rewarded for sorting their waste and other sustainable behaviours that boost recycling rates and decrease landfill waste.
